When I was in elementary school and high school, I kept a handwritten list of what I read in multiple notebooks--for about a year I even included my "reviews." I still have those notebooks...somewhere. Every now and then I stumble on them and enjoy scanning the lists of what I read back then. In some ways I was a more eclectic reader back then than I am now. I wouldn't have thought I needed to keep lists anymore, but this very morning I couldn't remember if I had read the latest Janet Evanovich or not. Even reading reviews on Amazon didn't spark my memory. I don't know if that's a sign that my memory is going, or that Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books are getting to be so repetitious that they don't even stand out anymore.

Twitter

Am unsure about Twitter--but will be open minded. I am torn between how neat it would be to get updates on topics that interest me and fear that this will be more information that I will need to absorb every day and I think I'm at overload already. I already read every day: professional journals, multiple newspapers, several magazines of personal interest, and books for fun---still love those printed pages. I often watch the beginning of the Daily Show and we've started to DVR Craig Ferguson's monologue (those count as news sources, right?) . I get the library comic, Unshelved, sent to my email at home and all kinds of other miscellaneous email information I've subscribed to--from restaurants, theaters, AACPL BookNews, etc. Can I really add more alerts with even more information to my day? Noticed a feed that would alert you to the newest urban legends added to snopes.com--that sounds fascinating. No, No, Mrs. Whatsit! Don't go there! Once I start adding feeds like that I'll never be able to tear myself from the computer to do my job or talk to my family.....

Digital Photos

Having done my duty in posting comments related to the 2.0 Flickr assignment I now feel obligated to reveal that I have still been using my faithful 35 mm film camera to take pictures despite the harassment I receive from embarrassed family members. In fact if I want to post pictures on Flickr for this assignment I will have to ask for digital photos from these family members and it could get ugly--they are not above inconsiderate laughter and the use of words like "old fashioned" and "It's time you joined the real world, mom." Last week my beloved 35 mm died on me. It's probably time for me to move on.

Flickr

It isn't hard to find yourself spending more time than you should searching for photos on different subjects. After looking at photos from favorite vacation spots I pulled up lots of pictures of the small town library of my youth that the library posted on Flickr. They had pictures of renovations, programs, material displays, the children's area, the teen "portal" (very cool), volunteer luncheon, even pictures of staff at the Checkout desk. It would be great to have a link from our homepage to Flickr and tags on the pictures that lead back to our homepage. Great way to keep the community informed and enthused about a renovation project. I think people would love to see pictures of the daily progress inside EDG when it is closed and we are replacing the carpet. Pictures of great programs might encourage people to attend future programs. The pictures on our Programming Blog are terrific and do more than any description to showcase the fun to be had at the library. How about pictures of adults, teens, children, politicians, community leaders, holding their favorite book? They might not want to take the time to write a review but would be willing to have a photo taken and shared. Those that wanted could post their picture and tag us and we could tag them.

Choosing a Name

I sat down to set up my blog on Friday and came to a sudden halt when I had to come up with a name for my blog as well as a sign on name. After 5 minutes of staring into the distance trying to come up with a creative name I realized I would be better off giving this some thought over the weekend. So over the weekend I enlisted the assistance of my teenage daughters--both of whom were eager to suggest cute blog names for me, including "I hope you have a library card because I'm going to check you out." Very funny. But no. My older daughter had the great idea to use something literary referring to my all time favorite book--one I adored when I was young and one we read together when she was in grade school. Perfect.
